Cville100 Op-Ed Program

The goal of the Cville100 op-ed program is to seed climate action discussions with analyses of and proposals for needed actions. Evaluations of the states of local climate action programs will be welcome. Op-eds may deal with broad or narrow topics of importance.

Op-eds will be solicited from knowledgeable members of our community, with unsolicited submissions also considered. Published pieces would represent views of the authors (or organizations they officially represent). They would not represent views of Cville100, which will be stated at the beginning of each op-ed. Conflicts between views expressed in different op-eds are expected and acceptable.

If you are interested in submitting an opinion piece to Cville100, please look first at the guidelines for our op-ed program.  For additional information, contact Peter Gates (ptg3va@gmail.com) or Tom Olivier (cruz.olivier@gmail.com).

Accepted Submissions:

The Need for Strategic Growth in Combating Climate Change – A Reply to DOE Nominee Chris Wright. In this column, Peter Gates challenges the dismissal of concerns about climate change by the nominee for head of the Department of Energy. The author also delves into changes required in growth-based economic systems to make them compatible with successful climate action.

We Must Return Albemarle County to Environmental Realism. Author Tom Olivier reviews the role of economic growth in driving the emergence of climate change and other global environmental crises. He also recounts Albemarle County’s recent shift to promoting environmentally destructive economic growth and the need for public pressure to force the county to end its fling with growth promotion.
