Featured Speaker:
The meeting will include an update on UVA bus electrification by Kendall Howell, UVA Assistant Director of Transportation. Representatives of Cville100 affiliated groups will report on their recent climate action activities.

General Announcements:
Bruce Glassco will discuss the bus electrification campaign.
Tom Olivier will report on the recent Albemarle County BoS comp plan work session and remind people of Thursday's (Sept 21) meeting with planning commissioners.

Energy Efficiency and EVs: why state policy matters and how new federal dollars can make local climate dreams come true!

Lena Lewis, Energy and Climate Policy Manager for the The Nature Conservancy - Virginia Chapter, presented her work on state level policies, such as RGGI, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles and energy efficiency are her specialties.

At this meeting, Emily Irvine, Charlottesville Climate Program Specialist, and Gabe Dayley, Albemarle County Climate Protection Program Manager presented a joint update on Charlottesville City and Albemarle County climate action programs.  

General Announcements: James Groves, a UVA engineering professor and Cville100 board member, provided an update on City public transit issues, including those surrounding acquisitions of electric buses. Tom Olivier, an activist and member of the Cville100 board, briefly discussed the update of the Albemarle County comprehensive plan.

Featured Speaker:
Charlottesville City Councilor Michael Payne will share his views on a range of issues. Public transportation will be the main topic of his presentation.  To get up to date on transportation issues here is a link to CAT's recent presentation to the Regional Transit Partnership . Additionally, here is a link to a recent City Council candidates' forum at which Michael and other candidates presented their positions on a range of issues.  

Attorney Bill Espinosa, and Cville100 Co-Chair,  will report briefly on what may be a changing judicial environment for addressing the climate crisis.  This includes children’s lawsuits in Oregon and Montana, a “granny’s” action before the European Court of Human Rights and a forthcoming article in the Harvard Environmental Law Review examining the fossil fuel industry's liability for homicide.

Featured at this meeting, Rob McGinnis presented the Piedmont Environmental Council's climate action platform. He discussed the integration of climate action into the Albemarle County comprehensive plan and a PEC campaign to engage the public. Gabe Dayley, the Albemarle County Climate Protection Program Manager, will provide an update on the county climate action program. Topics include the $100K Community Climate Action Grant and CPACE programs. Scott Clark, the new county Natural Resources Manager, will be introduced.  Scott and Gabe will field questions from meeting attendees on links between biodiversity conservation and climate action.
Christine Putnam discussed, “Less is More: Wildlife and Climate Friendly Landscaping Practices.” Christine is chair of the county Natural Heritage Committee, a member of the county Solid Waste Alternatives Advisory Committee and a member of the board of Cville100. View presentation.

Mike has been active for decades and in many roles in efforts to protect the environment of Central Virginia. In the 1990s, he served as a staff member to the TJPDC’s ground-breaking Thomas Jefferson Sustainability Council. American Climate Partners, known previously as the Center for Natural Capital, works in rural America to restore our climate and biodiversity using natural solutions. It hosts the Virginia Grasslands Deep Carbon Project.

The presentation will be followed by Q&A and discussion with the audience. This meeting is open to the public. Please join us for the evening and share your climate action thoughts!

Lonnie Murray, “Preserving open space ecosystems as an important element of climate action.” Lonnie is a member of the Albemarle County Natural Heritage Committee, the county Planning Commission and has served as a director of the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District. Christine is chair of the Natural Heritage Committee, is a member of the county Solid Waste Alternatives Advisory Committee and a member of the board of Cville100.

James Groves will lead a brief organizing discussion: 'Advocating for Climate Action by the City of Charlottesville: Transit, Natural Gas, and Finance.'   James is a member of the faculty of the UVA Engineering School, with a special interest in sustainability and Co-Chair of Cville100.
